Dr. Karena J. Heyward is a Clinical Faculty member at Southern New Hampshire University and a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia. Her journey to this podcast has been evolving for over a decade. Karena earned her M.Ed. in Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling from the College of William & Mary in 2009, beginning her love-affair (pun intended) with all things related to human sexuality, sexual wellness, and counseling sexology. Working with predominantly couples and families, she quickly learned how often clients wanted or needed to discuss the many facets of sexuality. This led her to seek additional research, readings, and trainings in order to most
effectively support her clients. After earning her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and becoming a Counselor Educator she realized there were deficits in many counselor-training programs related to counseling sexology and sexual wellness. Thus, she did what any good educator would do -- she created a course on sexuality in counseling and infused counseling sexology and sexual wellness into the curriculum for all of her courses. Additionally, she is a past-president of the Virginia Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Counseling. Most recently, Karena has become a member of the Association of Counseling Sexology and Sexual Wellness and is active in two foundational committees for this organization focused on counselor competencies and education and training. Outside of all of this, Karena is interested in transpersonal psychology, expressive arts, somatic counseling, body psychotherapy, and enjoying the magical things in life.
